This evening I put a saddle on Neville and ponied him off of Simon around the farm. He did not care. I left the stirrups down so they would bounce around on his side and he could get used to that. And I braided his forelock so he could have optimal visibility.
I also got some side view shots. I think he is getting a bit thicker. His legs are so thick. His knees and other joints are giant. I sure hope he thickens up into them. We shall see.
Today I took Simon and Neville to Slate Lick in National Forest. My goal was to pony Neville from Simon through some creek crossings, around some of the boulders the Forest Service put in, fire pits in camp grounds, and just general exposure.
He trailered there nicely, and was happy to ride along. He never hesitated or bulked at anything. He actually seemed to enjoy the creek crossings.
We did get attacked by horse flies worse than I have ever experienced. At one point Simon was leaping, Neville was bucking, and I was slapping them off both of them and me rapid fire. We ended up having to trot and canter to get away from them on multiple occasions.
Eventually the horse flies were too much and we headed out after an hour and a half of riding.
Today I took Simon out for a trail ride with Carol Ann. I put Neville in the woods paddock like I usually do when I leave him home alone. The paddock was prepped with two full hay barrels and a nearly new Lik-It hanging from a tree. I also left his halter on which is typical for when I leave him home alone.
When I got home he had green all over his face and his halter, even up on his eye lids. He had nearly finished the Lik-It, and wrapped it around a tree. Simon licked Neville’s nose a few times then trotted over to the Lik-It to go right to the source.
