February Bear Trap Loop 2014

February 23, 2014

Saturday was an excellent day for a trail ride and that’s just what I decided to do. I met up with Carol Ann and we went out to Bear Trap Rd and did my favorite loop.

After all the snow and rain we have had, Carol Ann and I were concerned about parking and the trail condition so we though this location would serve well. The drive in is in a paved road, and Parking is on the shoulder. And there are miles and miles of fire road so if the trails were too wet we could just stay on the roads. After all, we wouldn’t want to tear the trails up if they were slippery.

But the fire road was in great condition and the trails were perfect. There were a few snow drifts on the mountain ridge and a few minor snow patches on shaded areas of the road, but otherwise it wasn’t even muddy.

Just a brief recap, this is my favorite loop. It consists of a mile ride in on the fire road, then breaking off onto a trail that follows an old, no longer marked or cleared, fire road. I was told by forest services it is a former logging road. It is marked on the map and does have a well trod trail going up it but is otherwise unmarked. It climbs up the mountain side for about a mile, eventually getting very steep, and pops out on the ridge top of the mountain. This is also an unmarked trail, that is rather well maintained.

This trail eventually comes out onto another fire road, but to continue the loop, users must turn onto another trail almost immediately. Blazed yellow this trail wraps back down and onto the original fire road, where some good ground covering gates can be worked before popping back out at Bear Trap Road.

This time I remembered to start my trail tracking app, Map My Trail. This is an awesome app I have been using for a while, although I frequently forget to use it when I go trail riding.

The loop measures 7.3 miles and took us 2 hours. Very cool.

Boring Week

February 21, 2014

It’s been a boring, non-riding week. But I did get to ride Simon last night. It was so wet and muddy and slippery that we only walked, but it still felt good. It made me think of this picture I saw earlier in the day.

TBT – 2/20/14

February 20, 2014

This photo is from October 1998 and was taken at the Erin Fall Fair in Canada. I was coaching the USMGA team at the competition. My sister was riding my pony Osh Kosh and I hopped on for a quick photo.

This was the trip to Canada that the driver’s side door got ripped off my parent’s brand new truck I was driving. Although it was completely not my fault, I was still banned from driving it for years. I am not sure if I am *allowed* to laugh about that old memory yet (I am sure my Da would say no, you’re not).

Here are a few more photos from that same weekend

Pony Sledding – February 2014

February 14, 2014

You might have heard of skijoring. There are some awesome photos and videos floating around of it. For those who have not, basically it is a person on skis being pulled by a horse.

We have about 1 1/2 feet of snow right now but I do not have skis, or friends with skis, so we decided to try pony sledding instead.

First we had to lay down a track, and with such deep snow that took some work. Simon was corporative and pulled Rich down the hill. And then back up the hill. Then we switched to sledders going down the hill and Simon pulling them back up the hill.

Simon was into it, and seemed to enjoy being part of the party. But after a while he was done and decided the sled, the purple one in particular, was going to eat him.

Clearly Simon and I will be spending some time dragging the purple sled around. We need to make sure he is fully prepared for our next pony sledding opportunity. Which hopefully will not be until next winter.

Later we switched to porch sledding. This involved piling snow on the front steps and down into the yard. And we put a jump in at the bottom of the steps. No ponies were involved but it was still a lot of fun.
