Trail Report – Turner Run/Gauley Ridge – Explore

February 9, 2017

Tuesday was so nice, turned out, so was Wednesday.  So back to the trails I went.

This time I parked midway up Gauley and rode down Turner Run. Down the hill I saw a dog a little farther ahead.  Which put Simon on alert.  The road splits and we went right, and along the camp area (and really crazy deep ruts full of mud) and along a trail at the end, cross crossing the creek.  The trail eventually had a big tree down that was impassable so we turned around.   The map shows a white line (road/trail) off this area but I did not see it.

The left fork of the road ends quickly at a camp spot.  The little trail continues ahead (and is marked as a fire road that loops back down) but it peters out very quickly.

We saw the dog again. He popped out of the creek but would not approach me.  And was not too excited about Daisy approaching him.  I reported him to a lost pet network just incase.  But he looked healthy so could just be exploring from a near-by-ish home.

There are two trails that head back up to Gauley Ridge, although neither are particularly clear or awesome.

Simon and I zipped around these trails and up and down the road a bit and then headed back to where we parked.  Just to the side of the parking area (to the left in the photo) is a trail that goes on back, and it wraps around a ways and interests with several other lightly used trails and no longer used logging paths.  We spent some time exploring around there, saw some deer, and then called it for the day and headed back.  It was al a bit over grown.

And now the cold rolls back in :0)

Trail Report – Gauley Ridge/Turner Run, just a hack

February 8, 2017

It’s been a while since I have posted a trail report.  I have been trail riding, just not posting.  But this evening I was looking back at a trail report and started to get excited about trails I had forgotten about.  Which inspired me to start recording them again.

Yesterday the weather was amazing. Seriously it hit 70 freakin degrees. So what does an unemployed horse girl do on a week day in February with 70 degree weather. She hits the trails.

It’s been a while since I hit up the Turner Run. The drive in was simple and easy, and I pulled into the parking area at the top of Gauley Run and found it trashed. A ripped up couch and – no joke here – Pieces of hog strewn about. Yep, hog parts. Who the flip does that? 3 giant hog heads laying out in the parking area? Not ok.

So I parked, took a few pics with my phone for proof, and then hacked out.

Simon and I were feeling chill so we took out time and did a little “refreshing” of the area. It’s been so long I needed to remember where I was.

We went down the right hand, Daves Turnpike trail (closed gate in the back of camping area to the right side of the road). Nice views.

We took the top road on the way back. It’s marked on the FS map, google maps, tracking apps, etc. this was surprisingly clear. There were a few ehh spots but not many and I was actually surprised.

Trail report – oct 23, 2016

November 25, 2016

Last month I took both dogs and Simon and we did a fun ride leaving from the massanutten visitor center.  It involved a lot of rock climbing for Simon, and I found myself dismounted and crawling back down some of these rock climbs using both feet and both hands with Simon lumbering along behind me like a mountain goat.  It did take us to an amazing view!

Potomac River Ride

September 25, 2016

The last ride in Maryland was at the C&O Canal along the Potomac River.   Val, Kerri and I enjoyed a leisurely ride along this well cared for and very busy path.  Straight and flat, with lovely footing, it is an easy ride.  We counted endless turtles and cyclists along the way. Poe was a bit unhappy about the near constant train action, clearly a pony devouring device.  But Poe loved the dip into the river, and led the way bravely.

Sugar Loaf Mountain Trail Ride

September 23, 2016

Our next Maryland pony adventure was a trail ride at Sugar Loaf.  Kerri and I met up with Lindsey at a designated parking area and woofed down some lunch before we headed out on the horse loop.  It was a nice 2 hour ride, about 7 miles, on manicured and well marked trails.

It was a really lovely ride and we had a great time.  We also ascertained that Lindsey is not the best at trail navigation.  But, she is well improved already since the previous ride a few days earlier.

A great day!
