Blue Hole Trail Ride

January 30, 2013

This is not a trail report.  I cannot find my map to show where the trail was exactly, but I will find it and I will go back and do a bit more exploring in the future.

021

For this ride I met up with Carol Ann, and we took our ponies to check out to a new area.  We parked at the bottom at the Blue Hole Picnic Area and headed up the fire road.

023

There were a few houses and two cattle guards to skirt.  But after a short bit we passed a sign that stated this was an area in national forest with access for disabled hunters.  And shortly later we passed a fire road gate, closed to traffic.  excellent.

016

We tried a side path, which we believe was an old fire road turn off on the map.   It was a bit over grown, wrapped around the mountain and ended before too long.

We then continued up the main fire road until it ended.  There was a field that went up a hill to the left, and there was a clear trail through it.  We will have to adventure that direction another time.

019

There was also a trail that continued straight out from the end of the fire road, but it ended shortly at a heavily downed tree area that looked rather old.  We decided to turn around and head back at that point.

018

I also saw a few other smaller looking side trails, but again, will have to try those adventures at another time.

It was a good time, and fun to ride with Carol Ann and Finn.  Simon is so different around other ponies and had a lot more get up and go.  He actually had a working walk without me pushing him constantly.  It was kind of a a nice.  Although he tossed his head a few times, which was really annoying.  So next time we ride with someone else, I think I’ll add in a martingale.

Simon and Daisy

January 29, 2013

Simon is dog aggressive, and very much enjoys chasing them down in the attempt to stomp and bite them.  Daisy is aware of this, and very much enjoys antagonizing him.  Recently Daisy was running around the field, antagonizing Simon, and he was running after her, attempting to stomp and bite her.

Kim and Milli

January 28, 2013

I have had Milli for about a month and have decided that we just do not “click”.  This has been frustrating for me because she is an awesome pony, with a giant heart, an amazing work ethic, great grounds manners, and has done nothing wrong.  She has been a joy to work with, and been perfect when I have ridden her.  I can’t even say what it is exactly, but when I ride her, I don’t get that feeling.

So my teammate Kim, who had originally gone with me to try Milli out, said she would give her a try.  So she tried her out at a practice we had at James S Long Park in Haymarket, Virginia.  Kim rode Milli through some games and popped her over some jumps.  Milli took to games like expected, with out batting an eye.  She needs some work on her turns, and to learn to neck rein, but she is a very smart pony and will get the skills figured out in no time.

Maybe it was the golden of Milli’s coat, and Kim’s ever present smile, but the pair looked like they were glowing with happiness.  At the end of practice Kim took Milli home with her.

Kim emailed me a few days later and said she has been riding Milli and its going great.

I am so happy that Kim and Milli make a good pair.  Milli has been needing her own special person to love on her.  And Kim needs her own special pony that she can love on.  I can’t wait to ride with them this season!

A few photos of the rest of us at practice.  (Cayla was also riding with us, but there are no photos of her)

Simon and Milli Dynamics

January 27, 2013

Simon LOVES having Milli as his field mate.  They are inseparable.  He loves all over her, and then bullies her around, and she tolerates him completely.  When I work with one, the other runs the barn yard whinnying to the other (a bit annoying).
They both come running when they see me with big happy happy ears.  But Simon gets pushy, and bullies Milli away so he gets first dibs on me.

He demands my attention first.

He demands my attention first.

Milli politely waits for her turn to get some lovin from me.

Such a nice girl.

Such a nice girl.

But its all an act.  They even share their feed tubs.  They finish his and then eat hers.  So silly.

Riding in the Cold – 2013

January 26, 2013

A friend sent me this comic and it is very appropriate for the past few days of below average weather.

I have made a point of acquiring quality winter outdoor gear over the past few years.  It makes all the difference.  And like most equestrians, I get in a funk when I don’t get to ride for a few days. So having good outdoor gear is necessary.

Sometimes I don’t even realize I am in a funk until I get on and go for a ride.  It works like magic.  In fact, about two weeks ago I was talking to my teammate Kim, and was rambling on about being in a funk and she said “you just need to go for a ride.”  I grumbled a bit more, but the next day I took her advice and made sure I got in a ride.  And she was right, I just needed to sit on my pony and I felt balanced again.

So yeah, even in the winter, it is worth bundling up just to sit on my pony.
