2016 Mid-Atlantic #1, Let the Season Begin!

April 19, 2016

The MGAA games season kicked off this past weekend with the Mid-Atlantic Series #1 competition in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, April 16/17.  There were 10 teams in the adult division that my team, Gone Rogue, competes in.  We were in the first heat of session 1 on Saturday and hit the field ready for speed.

All in all it was an excellent session for Gone Rogue, with very few fumbles (I actually can’t remember any) and a lot of nice change overs.  We finished the session at the top and feeling pretty good about ourselves.

We hit session two in top form, and scooped up the points.  We won all but two races, which we took second in.  Not bad if I do say.  I will credit part of this awesomeness with a practice the weekend before that four of the five of us made.  We managed to work out some orders for races like hula and pony pairs that really require team work.  This was our only team practice to date, with us living several hours apart.  It was totally worth it.

Saturday night we had a grand time hooting it up around a camp fire, sharing pot luck and general shenanigans.

Sunday we went into the A final as the first place team, but of course our scores are wiped clean and we, like all teams, started from scratch.  It was a really well matched heat of five top teams.  We played well, but not like we did on Saturday.  There were a few fumbles, and as usual, in the A final, a fumble takes you out.  I don’t remember making any fumbles myself, but I did realize I was riding more and more conservatively as the session went on, checking up more for hand offs and not gunning it out as hard as I should have been.  This is a typical Krista move and something I really need to work on.  Its just as bad as making a mistake when you add it all up.  The fumbles that were made on our team were also very uncharacteristic, and not anything to feel bad about.  It was a tough heat.  We generally took first or second in most races but had about three dead last races.  This is out of 15 races and with our main competitor, Time Flies, mainly napping a more consistent first and second place finish in each race, they ended up grabbing the win with about a seven point lead over us.  They played like a winning team and earned every one of those seven points over us.  I am mad happy with my team and super proud of us.  We played well, just not well enough.

I was, as always, super pleased with Poe.  He was his usual bad-ass-rock-star self.  He is so responsive at competition, even more so than at home.  In session 2 during four flag, I did our inside turn for the end flag pick, and when I said “TURN” he sat and turned so fast I nearly flipped off him, missing my pull.  It was a simple quick squiggle back around to pick the flag, and the race proceeded on but I did manage to jamb my leg which ached worse and worse from that point forth, making leaning to the right, and remounting a painful task.  Stupid old falling apart body. But hey, not Poe’s fault.  He is just too awesome and blows my mind sometimes.

The Fossil/Adult division as a whole was looking great.  This division just keeps upping the game.  Time Flies was amazing as always.  Boarder Patrol was a four man with two new ponies, which showed, but they still brought some real play to the field.  I have no doubt they will be back on top before long.  Chaos had a minor roster change, and seemed to be having a good time with a fourth place finish.  A new team, Bootleggers, held their own, finishing out 5th in the A final, with a meshed up team of new and old.  I think they surprised everyone this past weekend.

The B final included the Bomb Squad, made up of three members from the former team Antiques Roadshow.  I was expecting a little more game out of this team at MA1, but they did have two new riders and two green ponies, and actually did quite well.  Full Tilt was made up of the same riders as last year, but with one their top ponies being replaced by a new pony.  I am sure this swap was a big change for them.  Groppits, Black and Blue Crew and Quicksilver were in their usual form, having a good time and plucking points across the board.

MA1 was held at the PG Equestrian Center, which is nice in some respects, and lacking in others.  But the main pro/con is that there are two rings being run at the same time.  Pro; we get through the games efficiently, con; its hard to watch everyone ride.  I did catch some highlights, and was amazed with Buckwild.  This team just moved up to Masters at this competition from Intermediate last year and they really held their own, finishing in the B final, and looking good at it.  They really showed they belong in Masters.

There are also quite a few new formed and refreshed former teams in Masters, and lots of skills across the board.  I saw some riders out there looking great on new ponies and others bringing back their usual skill from last year.  The A final was a good run, and a mistake really killed a team in that race.

I also caught some Intermediate play, which was well divided between the more experienced teams and the newer teams.  The Intermediate A was a well played final, with some competitive teams playing hard.  I did spend some time watching the kids on this year’s MGAA International team play and really enjoyed seeing them in action.  This is going to be a fun team to work with.  Two of them, Eliza (on a new pony) and Steph are on Buckwild, which I already mentioned as being awesome.  The other three were in intermediate on different teams.  Cora has certainly brought her pony Tank along.  They looked like a new pair our there compared to last year.  Mackenzie was also on a new pony, Cotton, and she was eating up the field.  I was really impressed with both of them.  The only one I didn’t catch live was Anna, but I did take the time to watch some video of her this weekend and was also well pleased.  It looks like she has put in some practice time since last year.

I am looking forward to MA2 at Grange in three weeks.  This is a new competition added into the line up this year and is a fund raiser for the MGAA Equipment Project.  The Grange boasts the best ring and camping facilities of all MGAA venues, and is sure to see some teams having working out a few kinks from MA1.

The season is here!

England and Wales August 2015

July 29, 2015

You might have noticed (but probably did not) that I added a new category to this blog page titled, “England and Wales August 2015”.  I am very excited to announce that I will be traveling to England and Wales, just over two weeks from now, with an amazing Under 17 team.  The team is made up of four girls and one boy ranging from 14-16 years old.  They will be traveling with myself as coach and manager, and chaperone Alicia.

We will be spending the first two days in London.  We will do some sight-seeing, traveling on the underground, and staying in a cool hostel.  I also booked us a team building session at an Escape Room.  I think this will be really exciting for everyone, and I can’t wait to see how the team works their way through it together.  In case you have not heard of an Escape Room, it was featured on the TV show, Big Bang Theory, this past season.  The team gets locked into a theatrical room, ours will be the Pharaoh’s vault, and the team will have to follow clues to figure out how to get out of the room with an hour time limit.

After London, the plan is to drive to Bristol, England, stopping on our way to see the Uffington White Hose, which is a large etching into the side of a hill with a white caulk base dating back to the bronze age.  Once in Bristol we will do some more sight-seeing and exploring.  Bristol is a rather artsy town, and the home of Banksy, a world-renowned graffiti artist.  This summer Bristol also features Shawn the Sheep, from Wallace and Grommet, statues all over the city.  There are also outdoor nature things to do like a visit to Cheddar Gorge and other landmarks.

After two days in Bristol we are onto Wales, where we will do some sight-seeing, and riding while staying with some friends.  The end of the week will be capped off by taking part in the two-day Welsh Championships at the David Broome Centre in Chepstow, Wales.  This is an amazing opportunity for the team, who will be riding in the Under 17 division, against some really amazing games riders including some of the best in the world.  They will also be able to watch some of the world’s top games riders playing in the Open division.

We will be posting during our trip so check back to this page to follow some of our adventures.  The fun starts the weekend before we leave with a training camp.  Then we shove off August 12th for a whirl wind two weeks.

2015 Mid-Atlantic #1

May 1, 2015

The mounted games season has started! Mid-Atlantic #1, held at the PG Equestrian Center in Upper Marlboro, Maryland was held last weekend and I was there with my new team, Gone Rogue.

This was Gone Rogue’s first competition and we had a blast. We were laughing and yucking it up all weekend. One rider on the team, Val, who is taking the first part of the season off to have a baby, came to support the team, cheering for us and giving us her sidelines perspective. At the end of the weekend she pointed out some race order ideas that I really agree with. Great points that were hard to see from the saddle.

Clearly I am excited because I am already talking about after the competition, and I haven’t even discussed the actual competition yet! Organize….

Leading up to the competition, rider Zoe was hula hooping and rolled her ankle, spraining it. We scrambled around for a replacement rider and ended up coming up dry. In the end, Zoe healed faster than expected, and with a calm borrowed pony, Boomer, graciously offered by Stacey Calhoun, Zoe assured us she could do it. Notably, teammate Val, who is eight months pregnant also offered to fill in. She is still actively riding, and took part in a polocrosse tournament the weekend before, but felt her balance was off for all of the leaning and remounting necessary in games. Although none of us jumped on her offer, none of us turned her down either. So it was lucky Zoe pulled through.

Saturday morning dawned and we were up and ready to enter the ring in our new dark grey and yellow gear by 8am. Our division had been scheduled to ride with two concurrent heats. This is not the usual format for MGAA team events and requires heats of teams to rotate in and out of the arena before and after every two races. The idea is to ease the labor on ring crew, although I really do not feel like this helped at all at this event. It also meant that we were in the saddle for well over two hours, in and out of the arena with our adrenaline going up and down. Poe in particular got annoyed. About half way through the session he was beyond fidgety. Grabbing everything in his mouth, pacing around, attempting to crib on everything and just generally being annoying. It also meant when it was our divisions turn to work a concurrent session that took nearly three hours, there were 7 teams resetting for heats of three and four teams. Over kill much? It sucked. Out of the five heat sessions we were at the arena for four of them, riding or working, and had one session to untack and recoup. Sunday was ten times worse with more races in the session. I could complain about this aspect endlessly, but I’ll move on.

Session one went pretty well. I rode really conservatively, but ended mistake free, and was happy with myself and Poe. The rest of the team was on their game and we did very well. The second session was also pretty good, with just a few mistakes. I missed a hand off to Averi, totally my fault, and I could not get back on Poe after agility aces race. I played it smart and ran to the mounting block after two quick attempts of him dancing around. Although I feel I made a smart move it still killed us in the race.

We did well enough in our two Saturday sessions to make it into the A final for Sunday. Yea!

Sunday also went pretty well. I had a lack of trust in Poe in one race and did not put my hand out to hand Averi my balloon stick. It was so silly of me. Poe has excellent breaks. Excellent. And I should have just stuck my hand out. But I didn’t and had to circle to her to hand over the stick. I still rode conservatively, which is something I need to work on. Kristin and I talked between races and I said that I felt like I was checking up way too early for skills, and she agreed. She suggested that when I felt like it was time to start slowing down, to go another stride. I took her advice and it played to my advantage in the next race. I need to keep that up and remember how awesome and responsive Poe is. * Trust in the Poe *

It was an excellent and closely played final session. Border Patrol took the win in style. Going into the second to last race, Time Flies, Full Tilt and our team were all tied. In the end Time Flies beat us out for second, and we managed a healthy third place finish ahead of Full Tilt. Chaos took fifth followed by Black and Blue and Groppits. It was a really good division and I think this season is going to be amazing. I am really looking forward to it!

Ireland Day 1 Part 2 – 2014

April 16, 2014

Guest blog by Jill

After we left the airport, we picked up a large, red van, and loaded all of our bags into the back of the van. Next, we headed off to Newgrange, where the oldest structures in the world remain. After we toured Newgrange, we headed off to our host family’s home, in Port Laoise. Once we settled in, we ate dinner and took care of the ponies. After a long and successful day of exploring, we went to sleep to assure we had energy to practice the

MGAA Nationals 2013 – Reporting In

July 19, 2013

MGAA – Mounted Games Across America – had the 6th annual National Competition last week.  MGAA Nationals is a 4 day event packed with lots of mounted games and lots of friends.  This year it was held in Centre Hall, PA at the Grange County Fairgrounds Equestrian Center.  The same location we have MA2 and MA4 at.  I arrived at lunch time on Thursday, followed by Lindsey, and we spent some time setting up our ponies and camp before we took our ponies for a hack around the grounds.  There was a bluegrass festival going on across the grounds so we rode through some of that enjoying the tunes.  That afternoon and evening the rest of our campmates rolled in including Carol Ann, Emily, Matt, Val, Jon, Dexter and Zoe.  Joy, Annie and Averi camped right next to us as well.

We had the officials briefing at 6pm followed by the riders briefing at 7 and then a quick dinner with goofing around before we all hit the hay for jogs and our early 8am session the next morning.

Friday started with everyone cruising through jogs, and hitting the playing field for the first session.  Our division, the adult “fossil” division, was comprised of six teams, who for the most part, were all pretty well tuned up.

For this competition, my team, Old School, took extra care, and got ourselves a real coach.  We had a clinic with Coach Regan the weekend before, and learned some tricks and worked out some hand off issues.  Having a coach is really helpful for a lot of reason, but for me personally, I felt a lot less pressure having her there.  She could tell us our orders, get us focused on the next race, coaching us as we were riding, and I could just sit there and focus on my turn and cheering my teammates on.  It was great.

And apparently, her mad skills did kick us into gear, because we came out of session one on top and kept up this streak throughout the other four sessions to take the win.  Which was awesome.  I think the team needed a feather in our cap, and a chance to come together.  It was good for morale.

Speaking of myself specifically, at this competition I was very discouraged with Simon.  He is normally slow, but he started the first session out, in his ultimate slow speed.  By the end of the five sessions he was breaking to a walk before I got to the end of a lane, ambling through his turns, stopping to smell the roses, and just generally lolly-gagging along like a 30year old lesson pony.  Being that Simon is only 7, I can’t imagine what he will be like when he is 30.

It was very discouraging.  I was wearing myself out kicking, which did not increase his speed, but helped prevent him from losing any that he had picked up.  He was being a dork for hand offs, but only on occasion, so it was even more frustrating.  All in all I did not make very many mistakes throughout the weekend, although I did have a few pooed handoffs, but his lack of even a normal moderate pace, was worth a mistake in every race.

I made a point of bringing a riding crop to the warm up with me on Sunday for the final session.  He warmed up with gusto, but as soon as the races started and I had to put the crop down, it was like the gas just leaked out of him and he started to yawn.

So that was the riding for me.  Slow and discouraging.

The rest of my team was pretty on for most of the weekend.  And with five sessions, that is saying a lot.  That’s a lot of riding.  And all of us loved every race, and wouldn’t have given up any of them, well except for run and ride race.  We would have rather not done that one.

Even with the help of Coach Regan, and the whole team, with the exception of Simon, being ON for the entire event, that still does not attribute to us holding the lead from start to finish like we did.  I really feel the other teams, particularly Time Flies and Red Solo Cup, were just not as on as usual.  Time Flies has been spanking us for the past two years pretty regularly, and they ended in third.  I noticed they had a few pony changes, which can really make a huge difference.  But I am sure they will be back in the flying neon pink when we meet again in September.  That team won’t be held back long.

The team in purple, Mischief Managed, had some rider and pony changes, that seemed to make for a more unified team, and certainly brought them closer to the top, as they went from the bottom of the field at our last two large competitions to finishing in second, three points ahead of Time Flies.  Red Solo Cup, took 4th followed by a really fun scramble team, Groppits, which was comprised of our campmates.  Black and Blue Crew, brought up the rear, with smiles on their faces.

In the end, Old School finished with a total of 324 points.  Mischief Managed has 244, followed by Time Flies with 239, Red Solo Cup had 203, Groppits 151 and Black N Blue Crew 94.

Off the playing field, we all had a blast.  Averi brought a little dog agility course and we enjoyed teaching dogs to go through the tunnel (Daisy was successful at this), jump and weave the poles (not so much success there).  We also had cookouts, with horrendous amounts of burger, noodles, chips and everything else, and we all went to bed groaning from too much to eat, after stuffing a few smores into our faces.

I really enjoyed the camping.  It was very laid back and full of fun people.  There was always someone to pal around with, and a dog to pet.  Tommy stopped by to tell us about his recent trip to Australia to play games, the Canadian camp site OLYed everyone awake for half the night (except for me, I can sleep through just about anything), ponies visited for some grazing time, and lots of other friends stopped by for some social time.  It was really a great time.

You might have noticed I did not mentioned teammates Linda or Kim as part of the campsite, which is very out of the ordinary.  They camped across the grounds with another large group.  For me it felt weird and I was a bit dislocated from that part of the team.  I was a bit down about it after Friday’s second ride, and being unhappy with Simon’s performance.  It just felt odd, and disjointed.  I usually feel so unified with this team, and although I really had an a-mazing time with the camp group we were with, I still really  missed being with Linda and Kim too.  Hopefully we will be able to camp together for the last two big competitions of the year this fall.

MGAA Nationals also has a social event.  This year it was free to all riders, and inexpensive to everyone else.  Our usual, MGAA DJ, DJ Shorty Rock, was in the house, and he really does do a great job getting the whole gang up and dancing.  And this year was no miss.  I really had a good time at this event. Probably a better time than I have had since the first MGAA Nationals because it was fun, but also laid back and most people were there.  We all danced and laughed and had a good time before retiring to the campsite.  Once we got back we night capped it off with a loudly enthusiastic game of Guess the Song or Artist.  Lindsey hosted and we were joined by the Winkler boys, who I *think* kicked our butts? All I know is I crushed Matt, and promptly called it a night after I got Old Crow Medicine Show right (one of my favorite bands so…).

The competition as a whole was fantastic.  Nancy did an outstanding job organizing, and picked amazing prizes for everyone.  The venue is perfect, the riding was hot  and the weather was unbelievably not (note to self, pack warmer for this venue!).  You could really tell a lot of work went into every aspect.  She was so good, that I have already recruited her skills to help me organize next year’s Nationals!  Yea!

SO all in all Nationals was fantastic.  And winning certainly didn’t hurt either :O)
