Kerrits Power Stretch Pocket Tight – 2013

I have these flat waist pants in black

I have these flat waist pants in black

I ride year round, including in the cold winter months.  Having on the right clothes makes all the difference in it being a pleasant (or at least tolerable) experience and it being an uncomfortable (or just flat out awful) time.  So like most winter riders, I have a few pair of winter riding pants that are fleece lined and nice and cozy.

This winter I picked up two new pair off Tack of the Day from different days’s listings.  Both are Kerrits Power Stretch Pocket Tights.  They are nearly the same pants, fleece lined, sporting two pockets, but with slight differences.

The Navy pair I own have a narrow waist band, with little belt loops. The waist does not always lay flat, and although comfortable, it’s more of a sweat pants waist band.  Maybe it’s just my imagination, but they do not feel as sturdy as the other pair.

The Black pair I purchased have a wide flat waist band.  It’s designed to be left tall and flat, or flipped down for a more sporty look.  The band does not get wonky with wear and fits my roundness a bit better.  The material also feels a bit thicker and a little more sturdy.

Both are warm, comfortable, and I tend to wear them all day long, even after I am done horsing around for the day.  But the best feature, is hands down, the cargo-esk style pockets.  They are fleece lined and nice and warm and they are big enough to comfortably and securely hold a smart phone and some horse cookies.  I have found myself on days that are just a little too warm to wear fleece pants, still opting to wear them because of the pockets.

Best feature on riding pants ever.

I like Kerrits brand pants in general and have a few pair of the Kerrits Performance Tights summer weight pants I wear on a regular basis.  With warmer weather rolling in I was hopeful to find this same pocket design in Kerrits summer weight pants.  But no, they do not seem to be available.  I think summer weight pants would still be durable enough to support this pocket design.

So please please please Kerrits, put some pockets on your summer weight performance tights!

The Roundish Pen

March 3, 2013

Last night I put up a roundish pen using my step in portable fence poles and some electric tape (not electrified).  Since I ride in a field and not a ring, I wanted an area to do a little of my work with Linus that was in the wide open.

It worked well, and we had a nice lunge and short ride in it. It is not exactly sturdy or imposing or structurally sound like a real round pen would be, but it does give a defined space to work in.

I also had a fantastic ride on Simon.  I love that pony.  He is just a joy to ride.  We did some simple flat work, and ran through some flag drills.  I was happy to see my flag work was better today than the other day when I practiced.

The grass is also getting greenish, so I pulled the boys off the big field.  Now they are confined to the barn yard and riding field.

Legacy Mustang Preservation – 2013

March 2, 2013

On Saturday, Carol Ann and I went to the Legacy Mustang Preservation located in Louisa, Virginia.  I met Jamie, one of the operators of this project, at the PA Horse World Expo.  We discussed me adopting a pony, and had chatted on and off through email since.  She had suggested I come out and meet some of the current residence and let her get a better feel for me and my needs.

On Saturdays they are open to the public and usually do informative demos about gentling and training.  This Saturday turned out to be a special one, because they were introducing a new member of the herd, Nate.  His mom, Katie, was bred in the wild, and had given birth to him during the week.
There was also a documentary crew on site, getting shots of this few day old foal.

Carol Ann and I met some of the herd that had recently arrived from Wyoming, and watched little Nate stretch his legs with the other guests.  After the guests left, Jamie sent us on a Mule ride (the motorized Mule, not the furry one) with Katherine, to see some of the other horses on this giant estate.  We pointed out ponies we thought had the right build for a games pony, and enjoyed the beauty of the facility.  We both liked a pony named Scout, and we also both pointed out Jamie’s special guy, Willy.

It was a fun adventure, that has games pony potential.  We learned a bit more about Mustangs and some of the trials they go through between the wild and domestication and why some of them have a second brand consisting of numbers on their rumps.

It was an interesting day and I’ll be keeping in touch to see what might work out for the LMP and myself.

Linus Had a Busy Day

March 28, 2013

Today the ferrier was out to replace a shoe Simon had lost. When he was done with Simon I grabbed Linus and brought him up to get a trim. As soon as Alex walked towards him, Linus melted. He leaped away, then tucked himself up and started shaking. Alex is a experienced horseman, who breaks and trains as part of his daily work, so he patiently spent some time petting and walking around with Linus, who continued to shake. Alex was eventually able to give him a quick trim, but Linus continued to be terrified. As soon as Alex left, Linus relaxed. We assume, that since Alex hot shoes, and had just burned a shoe onto Simon’s hoof, leaving himself and the area smelling of burning hoof that this is what set Linus off.

After Alex left, I put Linus in the cross ties, and spent a few minutes brushing him and picking up his hooves, with no incident or hesitation from him. Maybe next time Linus can go first.

After brushing both ponies up, I took Simon out and had a nice games practice. My barrel turns, which tend to be a little sticky with Simon, were spot on as I spent some time picking and placing bottles. My straight run flag placements, where there is no turn involved, were not consistently up to par, and I’ll need to put some work into that skill. A few flying runs through mug shuffle were simply perfection. My litter though, was nothing but a disaster. And it was all me. Simon was spot on for all of practice, and left me frustrated that he can be so wonderful and is such a joy to ride, but totally carousels out on me at competitions.

Next I grabbed Linus, and then hopped back on Simon. We worked on ponying Linus around the ring. It took a little work, primarily because Simon bullys Linus around, and Linus has a respectful fear of Simon. But under saddle, Simon was a gentleman, and Linus eventually ponied reasonably well.  He still needs some work at keeping his head by my knee and he also had no interest in moving into the trot, but we will work on it.

I also spent some time knocking games equipment around, and going through race motions while ponying Linus. I have noticed he is very aware of whips while lunging him, and I figured this may also be the case with Flags, considering they are rather whip like. So I pulled the placed a flag a few times and waved it all around and rubbed it all over him, all while riding Simon. As expected he was initially fearful of the flag, but being with Simon who did not even seem to notice me whipping the flag around, seemed to settle Linus quickly.

Next I switched ponies, untacking Simon and letting him free, and tacking up Linus. I started with some lunging because this is something he needs a little work on, and that I feel all horses should be fully capable of. I was happy to notice significant improvement since our lunge session yesterday. So we quickly moved to an easy ride. I spent most of it working on steering and bringing his head down some, with lots of stops, starts and turning.

I have also noticed that Linus has become affectionate towards me. He has been nuzzling me, and putting his head on my chest and his nose to my face. He comes when he sees me, and really seems to enjoy his new home and life.

Cisco is Now Known as Linus

March 26, 2013

I settled on a new name for Cisco, Linus.  I think it fits his personality quite well.
