Cat Crap – Review – 2014

June 29, 2014

I finally found sunglasses that fit properly with my riding helmet and do not give me a headache! WOO! The next step was to figure out to keep them from fogging up. My sister mentioned her friend uses something called Cat Crap for cycling, which led me to reading reviews and comparing products online. After my extensive, lunch break length, research, I settled on Cat Crap. Lovely name right? I don’t care what its called, as long as it works! So I ordered it from Amazon for about $6, free shipping, and it showed up a in my mailbox a few days later.

It comes in a little red container, similar to a Burt’s Bees chap stick tin, but made of plastic. It is semi chap stick textured, and is a greenish in color. It does liquefy in a hot car, but so far, it has not leaked out of the container. The instructions tell you to apply it using a small amount on your finger, rubbing it onto your glass’s lens, then to wipe it back off with a lint free cloth. This was pretty simple, and very quick to do.

I have been using Cat Crap for about 2 months now, and I have been quite pleased with it. I find it needs to be reapplied before every excursion, and it helps if I have a bandana on my head to hold back my excessive head and face sweat. When it has been particularly humid and my face and head sweat is allowed to flow as it pleases, generally directly to my sunglass lens, they don’t fog up, but actually bead up with sweat, like my sunglasses are crying. I think it’s just too much for the Cat Crap to handle.

I have also tried it on my normal eye glasses and have also had a lot of success there. This stuff is a great product. I wish it would last longer, but applying it only takes a moment, and I just keep it in my sunglasses case in my backpack for easy access. Until this year I just could not get away with riding in sunglasses at all. Not only could I not find ones that fit without giving me a headache, but I could not keep them clear enough to ride with. I have a very hot face apparently. Fair eyes and bright sun do not go well together. And with a sport like mounted games, keeping the sun, as well as flying dirt out of my eyes, can make all the difference.

Cat Crap has made wearing sunglasses while I ride much easier. I give it a thumbs up and recommend it for anyone with similar fogging issues.

*I’ll do a review on my awesome sunglasses in the near future

Helmet Ear Covers. – 2014

January 7, 2014

Yesterday Poe and I got in a nice 30 minute hack before dark. It was 16 degrees with the wind chill.

When it comes to riding in the cold, or really, doing anything in the cold, it’s all about how you dress. I put on winter Kerrits. They are fleece lined and have a cargo pocket. I LOVE these pants. I put on an Under Armour cold gear mock turtle neck top with a long sleeved t-shirt and a hoodie. Then I pulled my nice warm coveralls over top. I added my Muck Boots and a hat and gloves for good measure.

One thing was missing, my ear warmers. They are black double thick fleece triangles that Velcro to the harness of a riding helmet and cover the ears. I have no idea where I put them.

Later I was sitting at home and I thought I might try making some new ones. But, I was snuggled up with my dog so it had to wait.

Poe’s Bridle! – 2013

September 9, 2013

I fitted Poe into his very own bridle today. He looks great in it and it fits him so well.

I also ordered a crupper for him. It is a split crupper that is designed to hook to both sides of the saddle. But stupidly, English saddles only have hooks on the one side. Stupid tradition. But it will work great on my trail saddle and I can just hook both pieces to the tail of my English saddle. But I tried a little modification to help the crupper give additional stabilization first. Just to see if it worked.

I put a D saver on the top of the back billet strap on each side above the billet guard. Then I hooked the crupper ends to the D savers and tucked them under the cantle of my saddle. It worked surprisingly well. Much better than I expected actually.

Hilariously when I was fitting the crupper, I should have tightened my girth and put on my breastplate first. When I was done I noticed my saddle was rather far back.

And did I mention that Poe was amazing tonight? He was totally on. Stop, turn, go, stand. He was a champ. I love this pony!

Cotton Reins Fail! – 2013

September 26, 2013

I love flat cotton reins. I have been using them for years now and I love the array if colors. Great for a colorful mounted games team get-up.

Recently I ordered new blue reins for my new Pony Poe’s team gear. But look at this photo. The old ones are nearly twice as wide as the crappy new ones. They feel thin and flimsy companies to the nice soft wide old ones.

Needless to say, I am very disappointed.

Stick Horses – 2012

May 30, 2013

I have a side business called Cosmic Earth.  I primarily work in fiber art, and make an array of things including dog collars, clothing, and stick horses.  This is a business I have been operating for about 15 years, and it helps fund my horses.  I operate my business online, have a facebook page utilizing the mail, and I have a stand on Saturdays at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market.

I am really happy with how my stick horses are coming out and I wanted to share some photos of them.

They are also a very popular item. I love seeing the kids ride them around at the farmers market, and pick out their favorite ones.  I even mailed one off to California the other day for a sweet little girl.

This is particularly special for me because when I was a kid I was not allowed to have a stick horse because they were considered dangerous by my dad.  A real horse was ok, but one on a stick, not so much.  So now, as a 30 something adult, I relive my childhood love of stick horses through other peoples children.  It makes me smile.
