Rachel Papotnik Photos Simon

September 20, 2014

My friend Rachel Papotnik came out this week and messed around with her camera.  These are all raw photos, no editing or cropping of any kind.

Here are some of the ones she took of Simon, and two of Daisy.

I think next time I need to brush Simon up, and probably my own hair too!

Evening Ride

September 19, 2014

Two things to point out with this blog post.

#1. Simon is worth his weight in gold.

#2. Poe got in a good ride around the property without being a nervous basket case.

Wednesday evening I was getting Poe tacked up and Rich asked if he could ride Simon.

I tacked up both ponies and Rich climbed on Simon, with beer in hand, and off we went around the property, dogs in tow.

Simon was the perfect husband horse.  And Rich happily stopped for Simon to munch on stray corn stalks and over grown weeds along the way.  They were two pees in a pod.

This also gave me the opportunity to ride Poe around the property with Simon, so Poe could relax.  Normally he is nervous, shaking, and jumping out of his skin at every bird that shoots up through the trees.  But on this ride he was completely comfortable and he seemed to enjoy the ride.

It was a good evening.

TBT – 1/30/14

January 30, 2014

When I was around 8 years old, give or take, my best friend, Emmy, invited me to go on vacation with her and her family to Chincoteague Island. You know, the place known for wild ponies and the famous Misty of Chincoteague.

My early childhood memory is fuzzy, but I clearly remember riding in the back of their “colt” station wagon, facing backwards, and going to the Chincoteague Pony Center.

The Center had the real Misty, stuffed and on display, which I thought was a tad creepy. Cloudy, Misty’s palomino grand-foal, was aged, but still living, and at the center too. Emmy’s mom, Mary, took our photo with him. Being a horse crazy kid who had read all of the Misty books, it was like meeting a celebrity!

You may notice in the photo that we are properly dressed as the *cool* 80’s kids that we were. Emmy is sporting her blonde Little-House-hair, and I had the properly over sized horse t-shirt. My grandma made me those cool-lots though, so no making fun!

Stick Horses – 2012

May 30, 2013

I have a side business called Cosmic Earth.  I primarily work in fiber art, and make an array of things including dog collars, clothing, and stick horses.  This is a business I have been operating for about 15 years, and it helps fund my horses.  I operate my business online, have a facebook page utilizing the mail, and I have a stand on Saturdays at the Harrisonburg Farmers Market.

I am really happy with how my stick horses are coming out and I wanted to share some photos of them.

They are also a very popular item. I love seeing the kids ride them around at the farmers market, and pick out their favorite ones.  I even mailed one off to California the other day for a sweet little girl.

This is particularly special for me because when I was a kid I was not allowed to have a stick horse because they were considered dangerous by my dad.  A real horse was ok, but one on a stick, not so much.  So now, as a 30 something adult, I relive my childhood love of stick horses through other peoples children.  It makes me smile.

Legacy Mustang Preservation – 2013

March 2, 2013

On Saturday, Carol Ann and I went to the Legacy Mustang Preservation located in Louisa, Virginia.  I met Jamie, one of the operators of this project, at the PA Horse World Expo.  We discussed me adopting a pony, and had chatted on and off through email since.  She had suggested I come out and meet some of the current residence and let her get a better feel for me and my needs.

On Saturdays they are open to the public and usually do informative demos about gentling and training.  This Saturday turned out to be a special one, because they were introducing a new member of the herd, Nate.  His mom, Katie, was bred in the wild, and had given birth to him during the week.
There was also a documentary crew on site, getting shots of this few day old foal.

Carol Ann and I met some of the herd that had recently arrived from Wyoming, and watched little Nate stretch his legs with the other guests.  After the guests left, Jamie sent us on a Mule ride (the motorized Mule, not the furry one) with Katherine, to see some of the other horses on this giant estate.  We pointed out ponies we thought had the right build for a games pony, and enjoyed the beauty of the facility.  We both liked a pony named Scout, and we also both pointed out Jamie’s special guy, Willy.

It was a fun adventure, that has games pony potential.  We learned a bit more about Mustangs and some of the trials they go through between the wild and domestication and why some of them have a second brand consisting of numbers on their rumps.

It was an interesting day and I’ll be keeping in touch to see what might work out for the LMP and myself.
